Lars Ulrik Mortensen

Lars Ulrik Mortensen is a harpsichordist, conductor, and artistic director of Concerto Copenhagen since 1999

In 2007, he received the most prestigious music award in Denmark, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, as one of the greatest harpsichordists and Baroque music conductors of our time.

Lars Ulrik Mortensen (b. 1955) studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and subsequently with Trevor Pinnock in London.

From 1988 to 1990, Lars Ulrik Mortensen was a harpsichordist with London Baroque, and until 1993 with Collegium Musicum 90 under the direction of Simon Standage.

Mortensen has taught all over the world, including at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

An exceptional conductor

Lars Ulrik Mortensen began his career as a conductor about 20 years ago with “modern” orchestras in Sweden and Denmark, where his work with the Royal

The theater attracted a great deal of attention. Since 2003, however, he has focused on working with specialized ensembles that use historical instruments.

Albums

Lars Ulrik Mortensen has made numerous recordings, including for DGG-Archiv Produktion, EMI, Kontrapunkt, and ECM, and his CD of Bach’s Goldberg Variations received the prestigious French award Diapason d’Or.

Mortensen and CoCo have recorded works by Bach, Handel, Kunzen, Gerson, and Palschau for CPO, among others. In 2015, they released Bach’s Mass in B minor, which has garnered significant attention in the international music press.

Prices

Lars Ulrik Mortensen received the Jacob Gade Scholarship in 1979 and the Music Critics’ Association Artist Award in 1984, and in 2000 he was named “Danish Classical Musician of the Year.”

In 2007, he received the most prestigious award in the Danish music world, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, and in 2008 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm.
