City walk: In Weyse's footsteps

City walk in Copenhagen with music researcher Jens Hesselager in collaboration with Concerto Copenhagen, the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and Golden Days on the occasion of the Weyse Festival 2024.

"Ergo need not travel...
Votre très humble
C.E.F. Weyse"

Composer C.E.F. Weyse is known for his beautiful melodies, including I østen stiger solen op (In the East the Sun Rises) and Julen har bragt velsignet bud (Christmas Has Brought a Blessed Message).
He is also known for his notorious reluctance to travel, and indeed he never left Denmark after arriving in Copenhagen at the age of 15. So apart from a few regular trips to Roskilde and Vallø, his travels took place on foot around old Copenhagen.

As a prelude to Concerto Copenhagen's grand celebration of Weyse in the concert hall on September 29, we invite you to join us on a city walk with Weyse specialist Jens Hesselager, who will lead us in Weyse's footsteps around the streets of Copenhagen.
We will see where the famous composer and organist lived and worked. We will hear about Weyse's ups and downs, both personally and professionally, and get a general impression of cultural life in Copenhagen in the early 1800s.

Jens Hesselager is publishing a biography of the composer to mark the 250th anniversary of Weyse's birth. On September 7, he will be our guide on the city walk, where we will of course sing a couple of Weyse's songs and enjoy both musical and gastronomic snacks along the way.

The city walk is organized in collaboration with GOLDEN DAYS.
