The Baroque Expedition

On the Baroque Expedition, elementary school students meet five musicians and their Baroque instruments in the world of visual arts at SMK.

The program emphasizes the role of music in interpreting the images, and students are introduced to various Baroque pieces—music that many children would otherwise never encounter—which provides a good understanding of the diversity of music. The students create new stories based on music and images, and the highlight of the day is the final concert, where the musicians accompany the students’ stories from hall to hall.

During a workshop held in 2020, the students said, among other things:
“When the music plays, it’s as if MON a movie and the image comes to life”
“It’s spectacular”
“It was fun to hear music that MON had MON heard before”
“It happens right here and now when images and music are experienced together”

“I was completely blown away when the music started. I felt completely empty inside. It was so overwhelming.”

Comments from teachers:

“We are very pleased with the experience we had yesterday at the National Gallery of Denmark. It was rich in learning, but especially rich in aesthetic experiences of a very high caliber. The children got so much more out of listening to the music and viewing the images in this way, where the interplay between the visual and the auditory was fantastic. If you repeat the program next year, we are definitely interested in participating again.” – Hundige Lilleskole
