St. Anne's Girls' Choir x Concerto Copenhagen

Voices of Youth

Concerto Copenhagen and the Sankt Annæ Girls’ Choir present a musical experience that combines modern compositions with Vivaldi’s forgotten treasures from Venice.

Concerto Copenhagen and the Sankt Annæ Girls’ Choir have joined forces to create a truly unique concert project that brings together contemporary music and music from Baroque-era Italy. The ensembles will tour together in 2025, visiting Flensburg, Hanover, Cremona, Mantua, Venice, and Copenhagen.

A new work inspired by history and today’s youth

The tour features the premiere of the newly composed work *Prik i historien*, which draws inspiration from both the classical Catholic Mass and the sensual poetry of *Højsangen*. Prik i historien seeks to capture the beauty of young people’s community and friendships—a core value for the Sankt Annæ Girls’ Choir, which performs the work. The lyrics, written by Mette Damm, relate poetically to the traditional Mass texts (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, etc.) and bring contemporary stories to life within a new musical framework.

The music was inspired by Damm’s lyrics and composed by Anne-Terese Sales and Christian Berg, who adapted and arranged the material into a work that reflects the spirit of today’s youth.

Voices from the street

In 18th-century Venice, there were four major Ospedali Grandi—a kind of hospice that cared for the needy, including orphaned girls. Here, selected female students were trained as professional singers and musicians, and these ensembles became widely renowned for their high standard. The composer Vivaldi taught for many years at the Ospedale della Pietà, where MON an ensemble of 60 singers and instrumentalists

The ensemble is of the same size when the Sankt Annæ Girls’ Choir, students from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and Concerto Copenhagen perform Vivaldi’s masterpiece *Gloria*, which was originally written for the Venetian voices of the street. Now it can be heard alongside the concert’s world premiere, Prik i historien, which takes the audience on a musical journey from the past to the present and from the street to the concert hall.

The musical training the young women received at the Ospedali Grandi is often regarded as a precursor to the European conservatories of the 19th century. Professional development is also a constant theme in the projects of the Sankt Annæ Girls’ Choir, which is why the collaboration with Concerto Copenhagen and the Royal Danish Academy of Music is so important.
