ORFEUS

CAN MUSIC CHANGE DESTINY?

A riot of colors, contrast, drama, and movement—every emotion is brought to life deep within the listener’s heart in this story about losing the one thing MON most dear.

When the musician Orpheus loses his beloved Eurydice, he descends into the underworld to bring her back from the dead through his song.

The power of song is strong and can move us deeply. But can music and song also change fate and bring the dead back to life? This is the theme of Monteverdi’s 400-year-old yet still relevant opera, in which the audience is swept up in the drama, placed in the characters’ shoes, and shares in their emotions.

The myths of ancient Greece have inspired many operas, and the story of Orpheus’s fate in particular has struck a chord with many composers. Monteverdi’s dynamic melodies and dramatic sounds in *Orfeo* are so timeless that it can be hard to believe the opera was written four centuries ago.

“Orpheus is a mirror for all of us, a mirror reflecting our deepest fears and the greatest pain in our personal lives.” – Jetske Mijnssen, director.

This production of *Orpheus* was performed only twice during its premiere run in 2020, but is now making a strong comeback with a revival featuring a full five performances.

Reviews from 2020:
