KALEIDOSCOPE ︳Chamber Ballet x Concerto Copenhagen
The Conservatory Concert Hall
Dance and Baroque – as you have never experienced it before
Two of Denmark's strongest artistic forces come together when Kammerballetten and Concerto Copenhagen present Kaleidoscope – a brand new full-length performance in which baroque music and modern ballet merge in an intense and sensual universe.
For the first time, dance takes center stage in the Concert Hall at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Here, award-winning choreographers Sebastian Kloborg and Tobias Praetorius create new works for the lively, colorful world of Baroque music—interpreted by Concerto Copenhagen, a world-class Baroque ensemble.
Based on music by Georg Muffat, H.I.F. Biber, Antonio Vivaldi, and Claudio Monteverdi, Kloborg and Praetorius explore how Baroque forms, contrasts, and emotions can be brought into play with modern movements.
Each choreographer creates an original work, and together with Concerto Copenhagen, they reveal new layers in the music: depth, detail, and drama—shaped by the energy and presence of dance.
Behind the scenes
Tobias Praetorius talks about his creative process: "It is a great honor to have the opportunity to create a new ballet for the Chamber Ballet—and to do so in collaboration with Concerto Copenhagen. For me, the Chamber Ballet represents a very special encounter between dance and music—a space where both art forms can unfold with clarity and intensity. Here, both movement and sound are allowed to stand alone, while at the same time merging into a common expression. Music becomes dance, and dance becomes music. With my new work, I want to explore precisely this interplay – to let dance and music grow together into a whole, where the common breath between body and sound can come to the fore.”
Sebastian Kloborg lifts the veil on his work Live On Tape: “Live On Tape is a declaration of love for live music – for its performance, creation, and sharing. The historic Radio House plays itself as characters in and around the orchestra struggle to hold on to the music and the body's present moment – a moment that is constantly shifting and can quickly slip through your fingers. For who is left when the music stops? Us or them?"
A new encounter between cultural heritage and contemporary art
The collaboration between Kammerballetten and Concerto Copenhagen stems from a shared curiosity and desire to challenge the traditions of both Baroque music and ballet. The performance is designed for both experienced audiences and new guests who want an intense, lively, and different artistic experience.
In addition to the two world premieres, Paul Lightfoot's "Self-Portrait" will be presented—a modern masterpiece created for the Chamber Ballet in 2021, with music by Alexander McKenzie.
