Bach's Orchestral Suites – When Less Is More
Smith Square Hall, London Festival of Baroque Music
Together with Concerto Copenhagen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen interprets one of the best-known collections of Baroque suites as a striking example of the idea that less is more.
“Orchestral suites” is not the term Bach himself used when the works were performed in his own time. And he only added trumpets and timpani later, when the music was to be performed on a larger scale. An understanding of these facts opens the door to entirely new interpretations of this iconic work.
Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen have long been exploring a more minimalist approach to the suites, which are performed here by a 11-piece ensemble, where volume, grandeur, and pomp are replaced by elegance, clarity, and a transparent lightness in the dance-like movements.
The result is a brilliant example of how less is more!
