Arvo Pärt: A Message in Silence
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Concerto Copenhagen explore new sonic landscapes in the music of Arvo Pärt.
You’re familiar with Arvo Pärt’s music, though you may not realize it. The world-renowned Estonian composer has made a name for himself with his simple, ethereal, and meditative musical language, which can be heard in countless documentaries and feature films. His choral music, in particular, is famous throughout the world, not least in Denmark, where the choral tradition is just as strong as in the Baltic countries.
This year marks the composer’s 90th birthday, and you have the opportunity to hear Pärt’s music performed in Denmark by the chamber choir that has contributed most significantly to his fame. The Danish Baroque orchestra Concerto Copenhagen has joined forces with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of the choir’s founder and conductor Tõnu Kaljulste, and will perform his works for choir and Baroque instruments at concerts in Copenhagen and Aarhus Cathedrals.
“I’ve always had the feeling that much of Arvo Pärt’s music was actually written for Baroque strings. So now we’re embarking on this amazing journey of discovery together with the EPCC.” –
Nikolaj de Fine Licht, music director of Concerto Copenhagen.
Arvo Pärt draws his inspiration from religious experience and conceives of his music as a dialogue between the earthly and the heavenly. Using Baroque instruments and the Baroque’s distinctive approach to musical notation, we hope to offer the audience a truly special—and perhaps, who knows—spiritual experience.
