Arvo Pärt: Message in Silence

The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Concerto Copenhagen explore new soundscapes in Arvo Pärt's music.

You are familiar with Arvo Pärt's music, but perhaps without realizing it. The world-renowned composer from Estonia has made a name for himself with his simple, spherical, and meditative musical language, which can be heard in countless documentaries and feature films. His choral music in particular is famous throughout the world, not least in Denmark, where the choral tradition is just as strong as in the Baltic countries.

This year, the composer turns 90, and you have the opportunity to hear Pärt's music performed in Denmark by the chamber choir that has contributed most to his fame. The Danish baroque orchestra Concerto Copenhagen has joined forces with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, led by the choir's founder and director Tõnu Kaljulste, and will perform his works for choir and baroque instruments at concerts in Copenhagen and Aarhus Cathedral.

“I have always had a feeling that much of Arvo Pärt’s music was actually written for baroque strings. So now we are embarking on this fantastic exploration together with the EPCC.” –

Nikolaj de Fine Licht, orchestra director for Concerto Copenhagen.

Arvo Pärt finds his inspiration in religious experience and positions his music as a conversation between the earthly and the heavenly. With Baroque instruments and the Baroque's unique approach to musical notation, we dream of giving the audience a very special and perhaps – who knows – spiritual experience.
