Times of Transition
A concert that suggests the development from Baroque music to Viennese Classicism – and all the way to Romanticism?
Danish star soloist Andrea Brantelid and Concerto Copenhagen, conducted by Lars Ulrik Mortensen, will delve into a period when the characteristic features of the Baroque were being replaced by new innovations.
The concert marks a turning point in music history, as we move from the Baroque period with music by Georg Philipp Telemann, through Bach's son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, to the "father figure" of Viennese classical music, Joseph Haydn.
The term "period of transition" is popular in art history when forms of expression change, and it sounds dramatic, but it is rare. However, the development from the stylistic features of the Baroque, through the Italian/French gallant style and theNorth German Empfindsamkeit, to the youthful Sturm und Drang enthusiasms is fascinating and points not only towards Viennese Classicism, but also far into Romanticism.
Together with Brantelid, Concerto Copenhagen will attempt to illustrate the developments of that era, with an orchestra instruments in the sizes common at the time, which Telemann, Bach's sons, and 'Papa Haydn' would have recognized.
Concerto Copenhagen released the critically acclaimed album Times of Transitions with Andreas Brantelid in 2021, which can be heard here.
