Stavanger Festival: Times of transition - Andreas Brantelid & Concerto Copenhagen

A concert that hints at the evolution from Baroque music to Viennese Classicism - and all the way to Romanticism?

Danish star soloist Andrea Brantelid and Concerto Copenhagen, under the direction of Lars Ulrik Mortensen, will delve into a time when the characteristic features of Baroque music are being replaced by new innovations.

The concert shows a turning point in the history of music, moving from the Baroque era with music by Georg Philipp Telemann, to Bach's son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, to the "father figure" of Viennese classical music, Joseph Haydn.

The term "period of transition" is popular in art history when forms of expression change, and while it sounds dramatic, it rarely is. But the development from Baroque stylistic features, through the Italian/French gallant style and North German sensibility to the youthful Sturm und Drang swarming is fascinating, and points not only towards Viennese Classicism, but also far into Romanticism

Together with Brantelid, Concerto Copenhagen will attempt to illustrate the development of the time, with an orchestra and instruments in the usual sizes that Telemann, Bach's sons and 'Papa Haydn' would recognize.

Concerto Copenhagen released the critically acclaimed album 'Times of Transistions' with Andreas Brantelid in 2021, which can be heard here.
