THE BAROQUE EXPEDITION – A SCHOOL PROJECT
Concerto Copenhagen and SMK offer a completely different educational program that combines music, visual arts, and storytelling. Based on the museum's collection of art from the 17th century, the children work with professional musicians to develop new stories in words and music for selected works. The highlight is the final concert, where the musicians accompany the students' stories in the halls in front of the works. In addition to the students' contributions, Concerto Copenhagen plays short pieces from the 17th century on original instruments.
COURSE STRUCTURE
Part 1: The students are divided into five groups, and each group is assigned a musical tour guide – a musician from Concerto Copenhagen. Together, the students and musicians compose a short story about a selected image to accompany the music.
Lunch break
Part 2: After lunch, there is a concert. The students perform their musical stories together with all the musicians from Concerto Copenhagen. The musicians also play short pieces from the period for the students. The Baroque Expedition thus tours SMK's collection with the students' own musical stories.
PREPARATION
Before the course, it is a good idea to have a short conversation with the students about the Baroque period and the 17th and 18th centuries. During the course itself, it is the students' own experiences of the works that form the framework for the discussions, but themes such as voyages of discovery, lavish parties, newly imported goods, etc. may also be included. It is also beneficial to prepare the students for the fact that the course will conclude with an oral presentation of their stories and that other museum visitors may be present in the room.
YOUR ROLE AS A TEACHER
You have divided the students into five groups in advance. Each group works with one painting and one musician. Your role during the process is to accompany the groups that may have difficulty with this type of activity and to assist the musicians if the discussions about their work are not progressing well.
OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
Our goal with this course is to strengthen the students' ability to express their imagination, feelings, and experiences through music and visual art as a framework for interpretation, as well as to allow the students to take over a public space as art communicators for a day.

The course points to the competency goals for Danish after grades 2 and 4 and supports:
– The student can relate to familiar themes through conversation about literature and other aesthetic texts

Within the competency objectives and the curriculum for innovation and entrepreneurship, the course aims to support several of the target group's learning objectives, including:
– That students can play with images and storytelling and put words to the universe of the artworks
– That students can express elements of a piece of music in play and dramatization, as well as work in a shared creative process where art is related to the musical experience
