SMK wednesday

OUT OF THE DARK

Welcome to a world of drama and drapery, theater and the Thirty Years' War, sensuality and strong emotions! For the first time ever, SMK is presenting a major exhibition on art in the Baroque period in collaboration with Concerto Copenhagen.

Out of Darkness is a sensory exhibition where SMK invites you on a journey back to 17th century Europe. The exhibition takes you close to Baroque artists and music. Concerto Copenhagen helps set the mood as the story unfolds about a time characterized by alchemy, faith and superstition, witch hunts, war, capitalism and climate challenges.

The exhibition is based on SMK's large collection of European paintings and paper art from the 17th century. A large part of the artworks have been brought out from the museum's storerooms and retrieved from Danish castles, and can now be experienced for the first time in over 100 years!

SMK sheds new light on an exuberant and turbulent period that may have more similarities with our time than you might think! Muted music from two albums by Concerto Copenhagen - "Armonico Tributo" and "Ich bin die Auferstehung" - sets the mood in some of the exhibition spaces.

The transition from Renaissance to Baroque saw such fundamental changes in Western European music that we are still living with the consequences, so to speak. These changes are born of the same new currents and ideas that underpin painting, including concepts such as rhetoric and pathos.

Out of the Darkness will be celebrated with an exhibition opening at SMK Friday on May 26th, where Concerto Copenhagen, among others, will present Bubbling Baroque and a concert!

PROGRAM

Bubbling Baroque - Concert Hike

In the company of art educator Annette Skov and classical musicians from Concerto Copenhagen, we take a journey into the Baroque's wondrous universe of darkness, masterpieces and lots of music.

To the tunes of Monteverdi, Dowland, Lully and Handel , we let art, words and classical music merge - where we give space and get up close to the big emotions. Equipped with seashells, soap bubbles, poetry and baroque instruments, we explore this summer's major exhibition Baroque - Out of the Darkness and shed new light on the dramatic works of art.

With song, violins, lute and poetic texts, we dive into the breathtaking stories and experience the Baroque from new angles.
