Karl Aage Rasmussen

Can you connect a contemporary composer and a period instrument orchestra?

That is what Danish composer Karl Aage Rasmussen and Concerto Copenhagen have done and this collaboratioin is bringing many interesting results along with it! The appointment is for the biggest part paid for by the Danish Arts Council during the period 2015 to mid 2017.

It was from the beginning evident for Karl Aage Rasmussen and Concerto Copenhagen that the collaboration should not be "only" about experimenting with contemporary music for period instruments, it should also be concerned with challenging general assumptions about classical Baroque music among the audiences and with development of repertoire and communication in general.

Already in 2013 Karl Aage Rasmussen had written a piece for Concerto Copenhagen named "Concerto In Amber" for Baroque strings and saxophone quartet – you will find a live recording below. The project was such a succes that the parties decided to do more together and that's how the idea of the Composer-In-Residence arrangement came up. When the agreement was a fact we published this blog post about the plans (in Danish).

Concerto Copenhagen has collaborated with a contemporary composer before! That was with Danish composer Bo Holten in his opera "Gesualdo" in 2003 which later was set up in a new edition titled "Gesualdo - Shadows", a very succesful production set for re-premiere in 2016 and a Scandinavian tour in 2017.

The first piece created within the framework of the Composer-In-Residence had its World Premiere in November 2015 with the presentation of "Follia, follia..." in Copenhagen.  Below you will find a soundtrack with the live recording done by DR P2 Musik.

During Concerto Copenhagen's 25 Years Anniversary Fetival 10-12/6 2016 we premiered no less than 6 new pieces by Karl Aage Rasmussen: his Concerto for Baroque Oboe and Baroque Strings, his "Klippemusik" based on a theme from the time of Ludvig Holberg, and last but certainly not least Karl Aage Rasmussen's "stagings" of Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons – a kind of "updated" versions in which the audience is challenged by experiencing those well-known violin concertos "dressed up" in a new way. The concerts and the World Premieres were a great success – soundtracks with live recordings will be available on this page and elsewhere on the website soon!

Reviews

Laurels To Modern Baroque Orchestra

»A modern oboe concerto for Baroque orchestra with historical instruments? An excellent idea! The result was both beautiful and fascinating. [...] The concert deserved so much a large laurel wreath, because we have here some venerable heroes in both the composer and the orchestra. The next 25 years [...] is certainly more than promising.«
